The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
