Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in that campaign, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
