The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a figure of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your coat you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The evident and direct truth that Christ from scripture advocates for a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
So I have been inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?
The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it mean feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
